Auburn, CA (October 9, 2018) – A bus driver and student sustained minor injuries Tuesday, October 9th, as the school bus swerved off a road into residential backyards, California Highway Patrol said. The incident occurred on Bell Road as the school bus carrying a single student had veered into a pole and several residential fences. Homeowners were shocked at the sound of impact, which alerted them to the scene of the crash, CHP said. The driver of the bus, identified as 71-year-old Jan McDonald of Auburn, was determined to have blacked out after making a sharp turn, according to CHP. He was expected to be okay after the crash, and the 8-year-old student he was carrying was taken to a local hospital for leg pain and later released. Authorities do not believe impairment to be a factor in the accident. Officials report that the Auburn Union School District is working with the bus company to investigate factors of the crash.
