Nissan has announced a recall through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on more than 10,000 of their 2012-2013 Altima dean models overly improperly installed bolts.

These suspension bolts, known as transverse link bolts and power steering rack bolts, were reportedly not torqued to proper specification (or, not screwed in all the way, in non-industry talk), leading to the possibility for becoming loose and even falling off, leading to a loss of vehicle control, seriously increasing the risk for an accident.

Affected models are those built between May 10, 2012 and July 26, 2012, a total of 13,919 vehicles. Since this period, the manufacturing process has been corrected and bolts are now being properly tightened.

To date no serious injuries or accidents have resulted from the issue, though the longer these vehicles are on the road with loosened bolts, the more likely an incident will result.

Owners of these Altima’s will begin receiving notice of the recall within the next week, at which time they will be prompted to visit the nearest Nissan dealership for a free fix (meaning they will properly tighten the bolts).

Anyone with questions or concerns about the recall is being encouraged to contact Nissan Customer Service for information; the NTHSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline and website will also feature useless information for those with potential questions.

If you are an owner of one of these vehicles, you should remedy the situation immediately upon receiving your recall notice. Ignoring or putting off such an issue exposes you to preventable danger, and leaves you in a complicated legal situation in the event of an accident as a result of this manufacturing flaw.

Recovering compensation becomes a challenge if the cause of your accident was something you’ve previously received notice of the dangers of. By quickly responding to a recall, you will have the strongest chance to receive what you need in the case of an accident.
