BREAKING NEWS FOR LOS ANGELES
MAN FROM PASADENA DIES ON ANGELES CREST HIGHWAY
Early this morning, a twenty-one-year-old man was killed when his car crashed on a newly reopened section of Angeles Crest Highway, north of the La Canada-Flintridge area.
As reported in the Pasadena Star-News, the accident, which occurred around 3:05 a.m. and involved only the victim's car, happened a little south of the Dark Canyon Truck Trail. According to Ed Winter, chief of operations for the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner, Julio Cesar Velasquez was pronounced dead at the scene.
Velasquez was driving a 2007 Honda, headed westbound on the Angeles Crest Highway when he lost control, according to a written statement by the California High Patrol. The speed the man was driving has not been determined.
The victim's car hit an embankment and a tree. He died at the scene. According to a statement from officials investigating the accident, they are examining whether alcohol was a factor.
The section of Angeles Crest Highway where the accident occurred had recently been reopened by Caltrans. It had been closed since the summer of 2009 when the Station Fire burned through the area.

Woman Dies in Inglewood Car Crash Involving Police Cruiser
Early this morning, a woman died in Inglewood when the vehicle she was in collided with a police cruiser.
As reported in the Los Angeles Times today, according to Officer Travis Ruiz who spoke for the California Highway Patrol, the accident happened a little before 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at the Prairie Avenue and Manchester Avenue intersection.
Three Inglewood Police Department patrol cars were traveling with lights and sirens on to respond to a call received of shots fired about four miles away in another area of the city, Ruiz stated.
As reported in the news story, Ruiz said the first police cruiser cleared the intersection and the second police vehicle collided with a Range Rover. Officer Ruiz said it is not yet clear which car had the right of way. Investigators are reviewing the video from the patrol car and images from a red-light camera.
The police car hit the Range Rover on the front right side. The Range Rover spun around, and the impact of the accident thrust a female who had been sitting in the front passenger seat out of the vehicle. The female victim, who was 40- to 45-years-old, suffered fatal injuries from striking the concrete Officer Ruiz said.
The police officers and the Range Rover's driver suffered minor injuries, and a hospital treated and later released them. As of the writing of the news story, no other details were available.

Pay to Ride Alone in a Car Pool Lane in L.A.?
Driving on crowded freeways is no one's idea of fun, and sometimes, watching cars whiz by in the car-pool lane can add to the frustration. Well, commuters are about to receive an option when they're traveling on the super-crowded I-10 and I-110 Freeways in Los Angeles County. On a 14-mile stretch of I-10, between Alameda Street and the I-605, also on an 11-mile stretch of the I-110, between Adams Boulevard and the Artesia Transit Center, commuters can drive these sections alone, and pay a toll for doing so. Through a one-year pilot project, these portions of the two freeways are going to be converted into high-occupancy toll lanes, as called HOT lanes.
Scheduled for completion in 2012, hot lanes will give drivers who are traveling alone the chance to use lanes that currently only multi-occupant vehicles use. Solo drivers will pay from 25 cents to $1.40 per mile, depending on traffic conditions, to use the car-pool lane. Vehicles that currently can use the car-pool lane, such as motorcycles, buses, vanpools, and carpools, will not have to pay the toll. And just as they are now, drivers in the regular lanes will not be charged the toll.
As reported in the Orange County Register, according to Rick Jaeger, who is with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, funding for the construction project came from a $210 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. Work will begin this summer. No similar plan is in the works for Orange County freeways, although the I-405 Improvement Project includes the possibility of additional toll lanes between the I-605 and 73 freeways.
Easing congestion will help everyone get down the road a little bit easier, and hopefully reduce accidents.

LOS ANGELES TEENS TO HAVE NEW DRIVING SCHOOL DEVELOPED BY MERCEDES-BENZ
Generations of Americans can remember taking driver's education as one of their classes in high school. Students who were at least 15 ½ years old took the classroom and road driving course, which earned them a learner's permit. All of this was in preparation to take the driving test to acquire a driver's license, which many California teens celebrated doing on their 16th birthday.
Many high schools haven't offered driver's education as part of the curriculum for a while, and students have to rely on private schools for training. One of the newest driver's education schools for teens is being offered by Mercedes-Benz. Their teen driving school, which will launch this October in Los Angeles, is the first U.S.-based school by the company known for its automobiles. The school will be similar to one Mercedes set up in 2009 for students in the United Kingdom.
Students in the Mercedes-Benz driver education program will have access to online and classroom training, as well as hands-on experience driving on the road. The company stated that the standard driver education formula in the U.S.—with students participating in 30 hours of classroom lessons and six hours of road driving—doesn't necessarily create safe drivers, and cited research to back up its claims. Mercedes states they want students to be better equipped for driving, and they aim to prepare them beyond the basics, such as avoiding crashes and defensive driving. The Mercedes school will be the only one offered by a manufacturer that is approved by the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
The program will offer a curriculum that provides complete instruction, as well as options for those students who only need a portion of it, such as the driving-only training if they've already completed classroom education. Drivers can also take classes to develop and improve their driving skills.
In addition to offering education opportunities, Mercedes is offering employment opportunities for instructors, and seeking to fill those as it gears up for the fall launch. The company will also bring an outreach program to high schools in the Los Angeles area, which will use two-hour workshops for parents and teens to make everyone aware of how critical it is to teach teens to drive safely.
We all benefit from better educated drivers on the road, and we want teens to be safe. We hope young drivers will seek out the many resources out there to help them along the way to being road smart.

2 PEOPLE INJURED IN BLACK PORSCHE, HIT LIGHT POLE ON 90 FREEWAY
Two people traveling in a black Porsche on the westbound Marina (90) Freeway in Los Angeles were injured when their car hit a light pole and then struck the center divider late Sunday night. The accident, which occurred around 11:18 pm. on April 24, 2011 on the westbound Marina Freeway near southbound San Diego (405) freeway, caused the passenger critical injuries, and the driver minor injuries.
Firefighters from the city of Los Angeles rescued the people from the wrecked car.
The number 2 lane of the Marina Freeway was blocked, which closed it for almost a half an hour until the wreckage was cleared.
We don't know the most recent condition of the accident victims, but they are in our thoughts. Every accident is scary, and especially so when there is major trauma as a result. Trauma can take the form of physical hurt, and mental and emotional hurt. We hope the victims who are suffering from this car accident seek help.

MAN WANDERING ON 10 FREEWAY IS HIT BY MULTIPLE CARS AND KILLED
Early Monday morning, a man wandering on the 10 Freeway near Crenshaw Boulevard was hit multiple times according to a Los Angeles Times article. One driver at last stopped and called 911.
According to the news article, California Highway Patrol Officer Brent Leatherman stated that help responded around 3:41 a.m., and arrived at the scene of the accident that took place on the westbound side of the 10 Freeway. Troopers found the body of a man who appeared to be in his mid-30s lying in the slow land. The article reports that Leatherman was told by witnesses that though several cars had hit the man on the freeway, they did not stop.
According to Leatherman, authorities had no suspects for what could be a felony hit-and-run. If they hit a pedestrian, drivers should always stop, he said, even in cases where it is an accident. He stated that the person who called 911 after running over the body is what the authorities want people to do. "They won't get into trouble," he was quoted as saying to the Times.
At this point, the investigators don't know why the man—who may have last lived at a rehabilitation center on 6th Street—walked on the freeway. An autopsy will be performed.
AA-Accident Attorneys holds the accident victims in our thoughts. Dying while walking on a freeway is a tragic end. If you are involved in an accident in which you strike a pedestrian who is walking where he or she is not supposed to be, please stop and call 911. If you are worried about getting into trouble for hitting a pedestrian, don't be. You should be worried if you hit a pedestrian and leave the scene. You must stay at the scene and call for help.

From Seat Belts to Computer-assisted Corrections, Autos Keep Getting Safer
It's hard to believe that we used to ride around in cars without safety restraints of any kind. Many Americans can remember the cars they drove or rode in that didn't have seat belts. It's amazing that seat belts weren't even offered until 1949, and when they were introduced by the American car manufacturer Nash, they were an optional feature. Seat belts weren't commonplace until Saab, the Swedish car manufacturer, offered them as a standard feature in 1958. After that, other manufacturers followed suit. In 1959, Volvo introduced the three-point seat belt that most of us have in our cars today.
From lap belts, to three-point belts, to air bags, and child-specific safety restraints including infant carriers and child car seats, we've come a long way with our vehicle safety options, features, and standards. And our technology keeps evolving. Computerized systems today can help correct driver inattention, error, or difficulty with road conditions. Beyond anti-lock braking systems, that assist drivers by reducing skids, a new technology called electronic stability control senses a loss of steering stability, and applies brakes automatically. This helps steer the vehicle to minimize skidding and losing control.
Forward collision warning and lane departure warning are other technologies available on some new car models that help drivers by making computer-directed decisions. Without input from you as you drive, the car's radar can detect the distance between it and the vehicle in front of it, and automatically adjust your speed to maintain distance. Other technologies can sense a possible collision at slow speeds, and apply the brakes in stop-and-go traffic.
High-end makes and models of cars often introduce advanced safety features that then become standard a few years later in most makes of cars. Like seat belts and air bags, the computerized technologies of smart cars could make all drivers and passengers safer, stepping in with maneuvers determined by mathematical calculations to aid our instincts. How much more will our cars do for us down the road?

LONG BEACH TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS
THE PHOTO LENS IS WATCHING— RED LIGHT CAMERAS IN LONG BEACH
Maybe you've seen them, or heard about them. Maybe you've opened an envelope from a city to find a traffic citation and a grainy photo of you sitting behind the wheel of your car. You may have mixed feelings about photo red light cameras, but many cities, such as Beverly Hills, San Diego, and Oxnard now have them at a number of intersections.
The City of Long Beach, in cooperation with the Long Beach Police Department, has, according to their website, adopted a photo red light camera program. The way the device works is the camera, mounted at the intersection, snaps a photo if a car enters the intersection after the light turns red. A traffic citation is then sent in the mail with a photo of the driver in the car.
Photo red light camera programs are adopted by cities to police traffic without an officer present on scene. The City of Long Beach states on its website that the program is designed to reduce the number of traffic accidents caused by running red lights. The City of Long Beach explains that signs posted at intersections will notify drivers that the program is in place. Long Beach placed cameras at the intersections with the highest number of accidents in which drivers ran red lights. They are at:
• 7th St./Redondo Ave.
• Bellflower Blvd./Willow St.
• Cherry Ave./Artesia Blvd.
• Wardlow Rd./Long Beach Blvd.
• Anaheim St./Long Beach Blvd.
Long Beach states on its website that since it began its Photo Red Light Camera Program, accidents resulting from cars running red lights has dropped by roughly 35 percent.

PERSONAL INJURY ARTICLE of the WEEK
Advanced Auto Technologies Make Driving Safer
Large numbers of Americans are old enough to remember driving or riding in cars before any automobile on the road had seatbelts. It wasn't until 1949 that seat belts were offered as an optional feature by Nash, the American car manufacturer. Saab, the Swedish car manufacturer, was the first to make seat belts standard in 1958. After that, seat belts became common in other makes of automobiles. The three-point seat belt, that's in most of our cars today, was introduced in by Volvo in 1959.
We've come a long way in driver safety, from lap belts, to three-point belts, to air bags, and child-specific safety restraints including infant carriers and child car seats. Technology keeps evolving to help correct driver inattention, error, or difficulty with road conditions. Beyond anti-lock braking systems, that assist drivers by reducing skids, a new technology called electronic stability control senses a loss of steering steadiness, and applies brakes automatically. This helps steer the vehicle to minimize skidding and a loss of control.
Other technologies currently available on new car models include forward collision warning and lane departure warning. Radar detects the distance between your car and the one ahead, and automatically adjusts your speed to maintain distance. Other systems can detect a collision about to happen at slow speeds, such as in stop-and-go traffic, and apply the brakes even if you don't.
While many of these technologies are currently available on high-end models only, they will no doubt become affordable and common on many other cars in a few years. Improved technologies that make cars smarter make drivers and passengers safer, with travel easier for all. And that's something that can please us down the road.

Two Big Rigs and Two Cars Crash in Pomona
Early this Friday morning, two big rigs and two cars crashed on the 60 Freeway in Pomona. As reported in the Los Angeles Times on February 25, 2011, California Highway Patrol stated that one of the tractor trailers overturned, and was lying on top of one of the cars on the westbound side of the 60 Freeway, near Phillips Ranch Road. The 3:00 a.m. accident caused a huge mess, with three lanes blocked for more than three hours. At 7:00 a.m., crews were still cleaning up diesel fuel that had spilled on the road. The good news is that no one died, though several people suffered injuries from the accident.
Accidents at speed—such as those that occur on freeways and highways—have the potential to cause greater physical injury and property damage. And those in which cars and big rigs are involved can also result in major impacts. Being aware of what is happening on the road at all times and not getting distracted can increase your chances of traveling safely. But not all accidents can be avoided, since many involve road or weather conditions, and the actions of other drivers.
When a car accident happens, rescue crew will arrive on the scene to provide immediate help. After that, a car accident victim will need many other kinds of assistance. Medical bills, loss of work, and other concerns need to be addressed, and trying to figure out your rights can be overwhelming. With an accident as recent as this one this morning on the 60 Freeway in Pomona, investigators will still be looking for clues and examining evidence. The parties involved in this accident should seek legal assistance to guide them through the process of sorting out the legal issues.
