An elderly woman was killed after losing control of her vehicle on Interstate 10 Tuesday morning in Riverside.

According to a news release from the California Highway Patrol, the crash took place at around 9:20 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of the freeway, east of Cabazon near Haugen-Lehmann Way, where the 79 year old woman reportedly lost control of her 2011 Chevrolet Cobalt sedan attempting to negotiate a turn, rolled it in the center median, and came to rest in the westbound lanes.

The woman, an Alta Loma resident whose identity has not yet been released, was pronounced dead at the scene by responding officers. 74 year old Marlene Carlson of Alberta, Canada, a passenger inside the vehicle, was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The accident forced the temporary closure of the westbound lanes of the freeway as crews worked to remove the overturned vehicle from active lanes and clear away the debris strewn throughout the area. Police investigators were also on scene to look into what may have caused the crash.

At this time there is no word on what caused the elderly woman to lose control. Whether she was influenced by another vehicle or simply lost control is not yet known, though CHP officers have said that drugs and alcohol have been ruled out as possible factors.

At freeway speeds, the maneuverability of an automobile is diminished. Bends and curves in the highway need to be approached with caution, and attempting to turn the wheel too severely can result in a total loss of control.

If you or someone you know has been hurt in a freeway accident like this as a result of another driver’s inability to navigate at high speeds, you should seek help. Depending on the circumstances that led to your accident, you may be entitled to compensation to help repair the damages you’ve sustained in the ordeal.
