A young girl was killed, and her sister and mother are listed in critical condition in an Orange County hospital after being struck in a hit and run accident late Saturday morning in Santa Ana.
According to police on the scene, the collision took place at 11 a.m. near the intersection of 17th and Spurgeon streets. It was here that Eloisa Madrigal and her two daughters, 5 year old Osmara Meza and 6 year old Drecia Meza, were making their way across the street when they were hit by a speeding vehicle.
The driver of the vehicle was 33 year old Jessica Louise Cowan, who, according to a witness to the crash, had run through a red light before hitting the family and attempting to drive off.
The Santa Ana police reported that another motorist who witnessed the crash drove after Cowan as she fled the scene, and blocked her vehicle from escaping until police arrived at the scene.
Paramedics were quickly called to the scene to tend to the three who were hit. Osmara was pronounced dead at the scene, and Drecia and her mother were taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where they are still listed in critical condition.
A preliminary sobriety test was given to Cowan, which she promptly failed. Upon a search of her vehicle, medical marijuana was also found. Investigators are continuing to comb over her vehicle, and question witnesses to fully understand the circumstances of the accident.
As a result of her actions, Cowan faces felony charges of drunk driving, hit and run, and vehicular manslaughter. A court date has not been set at this time.
