Three people were killed when their rental truck drove off the road on Interstate 80 and into a tree Friday morning in Davis.
According to Bryan Konvalin of the Davis Police Department, the truck was traveling on the eastbound lanes of interstate 80 just before 10:30 a.m. near the Richard Boulevard on-ramp when it collided with an SUV in the slow lane.
The collision sent the truck off track and off the highway itself where it crashed into tree. An initial investigation had first suggested that the collision was caused by an unsafe lane change, though further research has thrown this conclusion into question.
The force of the crash destroyed the cab of the rental truck, and sent debris from the tree flying onto nearby roads, including a large branch onto Chiles Road, which needed to be shut down for cleanup.
All three occupants of the truck were killed in the crash. The names, ages, or genders of the victims are not yet available, as authorities are still working to identify and notify their next of kin.
The driver of the SUV that was hit to start the whole ordeal was not hurt in the accident, not does it appear any erroneous driving maneuvers were made.
The crash caused major traffic jams along I-80 as lanes were closed down to allow for police to investigate the accident and cleanup crews to rid the road of bits of rental truck. Detour paths through Highway 113 were suggested by local police as a way to avoid the back up.
