A teenager was killed in a fiery, two stage crash involving a disabled SUV Sunday evening in the Valley Glen area of the San Fernando Valley.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash took place at 6:30 p.m. in the southbound lanes of the 170 Freeway, north of Victory Boulevard where a Chevrolet sedan crashed into the back of a disabled Jeep SUV in the fast lane.
“The driver of the Chevrolet made a hard brake… but was unable to stop before rear-ending the Jeep”, said the report from the accident.
The driver and front passenger from the Chevrolet then got out of their vehicle to check on the occupants of the Jeep when a Lexus SUV slammed into the back of their car, where 17-year-old Miles Eubanks of Santa Ana was still inside.
The collision caused the Chevy to overturn and burst into flames. Emergency personnel were called to the scene to try to get Eubanks out of the burning vehicle, but he was unable to escape the vehicle before it was completely engulfed in flames.
Miles was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department. The front passenger of the Chevy sedan was also taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries. No one from the disabled Jeep or Lexus SUV was injured.
Multiple lanes of the 170 Freeway were closed down as crews worked to put out the vehicular fire and clean up the mess that the accident had caused. Investigators are looking into the particulars of the crash to determine what caused the Jeep to break down in the fast lane, and why two vehicles failed to stop in time to avoid a collision.
