County desert cities, Hemet, Perris and Beaumont. However, expect local law enforcement in most cities to increase the number of police officers and DUI checkpoints to reduce the amount of drunken drivers.

A specific patrol force will be assigned to be on the lookout for drivers under the influence. From 2007 to 2011 at least 38 percent of all motor vehicle fatalities that occurred each year around May 5 involved impaired drivers or motorcycle operators, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Drinking and driving is a serious issue. It accounts for a laundry list of accidents, injuries, damages and deaths. If you consume an alcoholic beverage, have a plan to get home after the party. Designate a driver or hire a cab to get you to a safe resting place like your hotel room or home after drinking.

Drivers who violate drinking and driving laws can face jail time, the loss of their driver’s license and can accumulate up to $10,000 in fees and fines, plus more expensive insurance rates. Having to encounter these unexpected expenses can put a damper in your bank account and personal life. It only gets worse if you get into an accident and injure yourself and others.

Safety experts constantly advocate that people don’t drink and drive. They advocate this because it can lead to car accidents and property damage.  At the end of the day, all costs associated with the decision to drink and drive are not worth the risk. Drinking and driving can tear families apart and cause dire financial hardships in others.

Having a drinking and driving violation in your personal driving record might cause you to lose your job or throw you out of the race for a potential one. It is not worth putting your career at risk for a night of drinking and driving. If you do decide to drink give a friend a call or hire a cab to drive you home.

Riverside Hit and Run Racing Accident Seriously Injures Young Girl

A 4-year-old girl was rushed the hospital after being injured in a Riverside hit-and-run racing accident Monday afternoon. Authorities are searching for those responsible for injuring the young girl.

As of Tuesday the young girl, Carlie Rodriguez, remained in critical condition at Loma Linda University Medical Center with major head trauma. Her family remained by her side, alert to the situation and hoping that it gets better.

“She’s got a drain in her brain right now. Some other lines that are monitoring her blood pressure and things like that,” Christina Perez, Rodriguez’s aunt, told reporters.

On Monday momements before 2 p.m. on the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and Nelson Street in Riverside, Carlie was sitting in a booster seat of a Chevy Malibu that was coming off of a stop sign, like it usually did. She enjoying the drive but would not have anticipated what happened next.

Out of nowhere, according to witnesses, a 2008 Ford Mustang that was racing an older orange sports car slammed into the Chevy and seriously injured Carlie, all within seconds. Witnesses then took note of the scene and contacted authorities.

Det. Rick Prince said in a statement that the driver of the Mustang, a vehicle that was reported stolen, then stopped “and checked on the occupants of the Malibu and then fled on foot, leaving the Mustang behind.”

When emergency personnel arrived at the scene, they rushed the injured girl to the hospital, where she remained for medical attention.

Her father, the driver, was not injured, Riverside police told reporters.

Authorities said the driver of the sports car failed to stop and fled the scene. When he is found, he can face serious consequences for leaving the scene of the Riverside racing car accident.

“Anytime a street race is involved both vehicles including the non-contact vehicle will be held responsible for whatever took place here,” Sgt. Skip Stowalter reminded reporters.

Currently, authorities are working on the case, studying evidence and interviewing witnesses. They have not released other details regarding the wreck that injured the 4-year-old girl.

Failing to Yield to Pedestrians Earns 38 Drivers Tickets from Riverside Police Department

The Riverside Police Department cited 38 drivers for failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, The Press-Enterprise reports. In one two-hour span on Wednesday, March 7, 2012, according to Riverside Police, they caught that number of drivers going through crosswalks in downtown Riverside while pedestrians were in them. Some of the drivers, police said, were putting on makeup or talking on a cell phone, according to the news story.

According to Lt. Chris Manning, the Riverside Police Department put the operation in place to make crossing the street safer for pedestrians. The number of drivers who entered crosswalks with pedestrians in them in a short amount of time indicates a problem, Lt. Manning said, as The Press-Enterprise reports.

Officers in plainclothes conducted the operation on Market Street, crossing in places where the sightlines were good. They also gave drivers time to stop, Lt. Manning said. After violations occurred, officers on motorcycles pursued the drivers who failed to yield.

So that there would not be protests, Lt. Manning said in The Press-Enterprise’s story, drivers did not receive citations on Wednesday if the person walking in the crosswalk had already passed the middle of the street. The law, however, requires motorists to remain stopped until a person walking in the crosswalk has fully crossed and left the crosswalk. Officers have some discretion, Lt. Manning said, in deciding whether to issue a ticket.

According to Lt. Manning, some drivers who were talking on hands-free telephones on Wednesday were too distracted—even though they were using devices that allowed their hands to remain on the wheel—to notice a person walking in the crosswalk. The news story says one driver left skid marks on the road because he had to brake at the last moment.

Every couple of months, the Riverside Police Department puts these pedestrian operations in place, in the hope that drivers will pay more attention to their driving. Lt. Manning hopes in the future, police won’t have to write any tickets for failing to yield to pedestrians.
