A solo fire truck wreck hospitalized four members of an Orange County Fire Authority crew and caused a street closure Wednesday night.
OCFA Engine 61 was responding to a medical aid call at about 7 p.m. when the crash took place near the Crescent Avenue and Los Altos Drive intersection per Capt. Marc Stone.
The Buena Park-based engine was turning from Crescent into a service road west of Los Altos when for an unwarned reason it ran on a median and struck a large pine tree. Further details of the situation were not made public as the situation remains under investigation.
“For some reason, they lost control,” Stone said.
An initial look at the scene shows where the wheel marks indicate the engine swerved prior to the collision.
The passenger’s side of the engine reportedly struck the tree causing heavy damage to the engine. Its impact injured four firefighters on various scales ranging from minor to moderate, none being life-threatening.
Approximately 10 to 15 feet of the upper section of the pine tree tore off on impact.
Medical professionals rushed the injured fire fighters to the UCI Medical Center facilities in Orange according to Stone.
There were no other personal injury or vehicle damage reports.
Due to the fire truck wreck, authorities temporarily shut westbound Crescent while investigators studied the scene to determine what happened.
Car accidents can happen to anyone, anywhere at unwarned times. It is advised that to prevent automotive wrecks people obey the rules of the road at all times, stay aware and remain cautions and alert always, especially on public roads.
Public roads are places where cars can come in from any direction at any speed. They are sometimes filled with novice and unlicensed drivers. Though it’s not only a novice drivers’ character to be distracted, sometimes experienced drivers too comfortable behind the wheel get preoccupied with subjects other than driving that call for their attention to be diverted off the road and crash. At speeds of about 45 miles per hour a driver can easily travel the length of a football field within seconds without knowing it until it’s too late.
Distracted driving not only jeopardizes the safety and the finances of the person driving the vehicle and all of the other people on or near the road but that of the people they are connected to as well. If the provider of a family is struck by a distracted driver then is out of a job a then that family is out on the streets and who will provide for them?
If you have been injured in a wreck, contact an Orange County lawyer, you may be eligible for compensation.
A 52 year old woman was killed after driving her car down the wrong side of the road and crashing head on with a big rig Tuesday afternoon in Lake Forest.
Early this morning, a tanker truck and a car collided on Interstate 15 near the Nevada border, and a resulting hazardous chemical spill has led to the freeway being closed in both directions, The Press-Enterprise reports. The overturned tanker truck is continuing to leak a hazardous substance, and according to California Highway Patrol and officials from Caltrans, the cleanup is likely to take all day and continue into the evening. The route is the main travel corridor for people driving between the Southland and Las Vegas. A spokeswoman for Caltrans said it takes many hours to clean up ferric chloride, which the truck had been carrying.
The 6:25 a.m. incident on June 22, 2012 occurred when a tanker truck and a car collided near Primm Valley Golf Club, The Press-Enterprise reports. The accident site is roughly five miles south of the Nevada border.
As of 9:30 a.m., the truck’s load of 1,400 gallons of ferric chloride was continuing to spill from the damaged vehicle into a ditch in the center divider, CHP Officer Adam Croxton said. He conveyed this information from the scene of the accident, the news story says.
The truck and car had been traveling in the northbound lanes when they collided, which caused the truck driver to lose control. The truck then swerved into the center divider and overturned, Croxton said in the The Press-Enterprise’s story. The car ended up facing the wrong way in the southbound lanes.
Because the spill, and cleanup are located in the center divider, both lanes of traffic in both directions are closed. Croxton said that southbound traffic has been stopped at the state line, and northbound traffic is halted at Yates Well Road, which is the off-ramp for the Primm Valley Golf Club. The spilled chemical is used in industrial processes, such as manufacturing electronic circuit boards, the news story says. The liquid, orange-brown in color, is not specifically regulated as toxic or hazardous by OSHA, The Press-Enterprise reports, but it causes health problems such as eye irritation, blurred vision, skin irritation, and respiratory irritation.

A cellphone video that was uploaded to the internet after an apparent road rage incident on the northbound side of the I-5 freeway has caught the interest of the California Highway Patrol team responsible for controlling these violent outbursts, according to a statement released on Tuesday.
CHP officer Denise Joslin said in the statement that the violent incident apparently occurred at about 3:30 p.m. on June 12 on the shoulder of the northbound I-5, just south of the Seventh Street exit, according to reports from the City News Service.
They discovered the video after it was posted on the website LiveLeak. It apparently shows three men arguing fiercely with one other man on the shoulder of the freeway after they got out of their vehicles. Two men took hold of the man and threw him to the ground where he was then savagely kicked as he lay prostrate on the asphalt. Finally, the three men fled the scene in a Volkswagen Jetta with the license plate number 3UGW962.
The three men responsible for the beating have yet to be found by the CHP or any other authoritative body and are asking witnesses to call their central office at 213-744-2331.
According to CHP officer Chris Baldonado, their team received reports of “highway violence” but when they arrived at the scene to offer assistance, all of the people involved had left, including the victim of the violence.
Baldonado reminded motorists to be courteous while driving and to treat other drivers with respect.
“First off, the freeway is not a fighting ring,” Baldonado said. “Be the bigger person and let it go. It’s not worth it as you can see in the video.”
He also addressed the witnesses of this incident by saying that the best thing to do is to call 911 and allow authorities to handle the incident. Baldonado said that under no circumstance should a witness attempt to intervene in a violent road rage incident.
The CHP also said on Wednesday that this is not the first time in recent memory that something like this has happened. In Orange County in May, two vehicles collided and slowed traffic on the southbound I-5 at the Orangewood exit. The two motorists involved started fighting after a heated argument about who was at fault.
In April of 2011, a resident of Santa Ana was sentenced to 11 years in state prison for ramming the rear-end of another vehicle with his car after fighting with the other driver on the I-605 in Long Beach. The driver of the other vehicle died at the scene from the impact of the crash.

A new national epidemic has emerged recently among teenagers that could potentially be more dangerous than any other type of motor-vehicle accidents.
According to the a new study by the Centers for Disease Control, most teenagers admit that while they drive, they also use their phones to text and email their friends.
The study surveyed 15,000 different high school students throughout the United States about the different risky activities that engage in while driving.
For the first time, questions about texting and emailing were included in the survey.
The data found that approximately one in three high school students use their cellphones to text while they are also in control of a motor-vehicle during the past 30 days.
The study also showed that the percentage of students who texted and drove was higher with upperclassmen than with younger students.
In the past month, almost 43 percent of junior division students and about 58 percent of senior students said that they had done it.
According to the majority of the students surveyed, they felt that it was ok to text while they were stopped in traffic or while they were at a red light.
Other teenagers say that they also hold up their phone above the steering wheel so they can see both the road and the phone at the same time.
Officials say that this practice is extremely dangerous and can lead to fatal accidents. Statistics say texting is listed as the official cause of death in about 16 percent of all fatal car crashes involving teenagers.
“Texting or emailing while driving a car can have deadly consequences,” said Howell Wechsler, director of the CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health.
One crash survivor even explained how her life was negatively impacted by another driver’s texting and driving at a news conference in Washington on Thursday afternoon.
“I sustained a traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, neck, rib, hip injuries and some emotional stuff too,” Alison Holden said.
“She should have been focusing on the road, but instead she was on her phone and hit me.”
However, the CDC study also said that teenagers are now better about wearing seatbelts and fewer teens are driving and drinking.
The number of high school students who never wore used seatbelts decreased from about 26 percent to 8 percent over the last two decades, the CDC said.
Only 8 percent said that in the past 30 days they had operated a motor-vehicle while they were under the influence of alcohol, compared to 17 percent in 1997.
The number of students who rode in the same vehicle as a drunk driver was also significantly decreased by 16 percent, dropping from 40 percent to 24 percent over the past 20 years.

California Highway Patrol officials said that a Ford Bronco overturned on the southbound 55 just north of Dyer Road and ejected a 22-year-old woman through the window early Sunday morning.

Sgt. Chris Berry of the California Highway Patrol said that they received reports of the accident at 5:31 a.m.
“It looks like it could have been a possible tread separation,” Berry said. “The driver of the Bronco, a 69-year-old man from Riverside, swerved to the right and the truck overturned several times.”
Police officials later identified the deceased woman as Yoeen Sauseda, of Riverside.
According to the initial investigation, she was seated behind the driver in the backseat. She did not appear to be wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and when the vehicle rolled over, she was thrown through the window onto the road. She hit the concrete retaining wall on the side of the freeway and was later taken to Western Medical Center Santa Ana, Berry said.
She was pronounced dead by examiners at the hospital.
The other three occupants of the vehicle – Erasmo Molina, Armando Angeles, 27, and Vanesa Sauseda, 18, all of Riverside – were severely injured in the crash and were taken to UCI Medical Center. Reports from the California Highway Patrol suggested that these three were wearing seatbelts at the time of this crash.
It is still unknown what caused the crash and officials are investigating.
It is compulsory for all occupants of motor vehicles in the United States to wear a seat belt, or safety belt. According to several studies, wearing a seat belt significantly reduces the wearer’s chance of severe injury or death in a traffic collision by preventing them from hitting against the interior of the car and keeping them positioned for the maximum positive effect of the airbag.
The first modern three-point seat belt was invented in 1955 for the Swedish car-manufacturer Volvo by Roger W. Griswold and Hugh DeHaven.
The inventors conducted a series of studies to test the effectiveness of seat belts in 28,000 traffic accidents. The results clearly showed that not a single one of the belted occupants in their test sustained fatal injuries at speeds below 60 M.P.H. Unbelted passengers and drivers in these vehicles suffered fatalities regardless of the speed of the crash.
The United States later adopted mandatory seat belt laws in all 50 states because of these initial tests. In one study, data showed that 40% more people escaped injury when wearing their seat belt and 35% more escaped minor and moderate injuries in a crash. Another study done in the United States showed that the odds ratio of crash death is 0.46 with a three-point belt.

A multiple-vehicle crash on Tuesday afternoon left a 70-year-old woman critically injured after she failed to slow down at an intersection and crashed into several vehicles.
The five vehicles that were involved in the accident were stopped at the intersection of Irvine Boulevard and Prospect Avenue just before 1 p.m. Several of the drivers and occupants of those cars were taken to the hospital as well.
Firefighters from the Orange County Fire Authority had to use heavy machinery to extract a woman from the red Ford Festiva that she was driving.
The 70-year-old woman was driving a red Ford Mustang in the westbound lanes of Irvine Boulevard at 50-60 mph when she failed to see that traffic was stopped ahead, according to Tustin police officer Sgt. Duane Havourd.
She crashed into the back of one of the cars, causing it to fly forward into the rear end of another car. This caused a multiple car pile-up, according to witnesses.
The woman was transported to the Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where she was listed in critical condition.
Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Marc Stone said that a driver of another vehicle suffered traumatic head injuries and was also taken to the same hospital.
The two female passengers of the third vehicle involved sustained minor injuries. They were transported to a different hospital for treatment and evaluation.
Authorities are unsure if alcohol or drugs were involved in the accident.
Predictions from research show that the number of elderly drivers in the United States will triple over the next 20 years. As elderly drivers have an increasing presence on our roads, it is important for other drivers to be aware of the dangers that surround their declining capabilities.
Older drivers are generally more conservative while driving, which could be potentially dangerous because they second-guess their abilities.
Statistics show that older drivers are significantly more likely to be involved in accidents than younger drivers, especially when they are at intersections.
After the age of 75, statistics also show that the risk of driver fatality sharply increases and makes the drivers more vulnerable to both injury and death.
Senior citizens represent 5% of all people involved in traffic crashes and make up 13% of all traffic-related deaths. Elderly drivers are also responsible for causing 18% of all pedestrian accidents on the roads of the United States.

Police reports stated that several lanes on the northbound side of the I-5 freeway were blocked after a multiple vehicle crash.
The collision occurred just north of Lake Forest Drive at about 8:30 a.m. and at least five different vehicles were involved, according to police statements.
When paramedics arrived at the scene of the crash, the five vehicles were spread across the multiple lanes of traffic, but they were later shifted to the right shoulder of the freeway as authorities worked to clear the accident.
The crash occurred when one of the vehicles rear-ended another, and then a pile-up occurred that spread across the freeway as vehicles attempted to swerve out of the way of the damaged cars.
California Highway Patrol officer Denise Quesada reported that there were some injuries in the crash, but she did not specify what they were or identify any of the victims.
A SigAlert was issued just after 9 a.m. for the number 3, 4, and 5 lanes by traffic officials. All of the lanes were cleared about two hours later.
Luckily, this accident did not leave any of the motorists severely injured or dead. However, multiple-vehicle collisions can be some of the most deadly types of traffic accidents today.
Most likely the high fatality rate of multiple-vehicle crashes is due to the fact that many victims cannot escape their vehicles after the crash, because the impact leaves the outside of the vehicle so damaged that the doors will no longer open. Even if the occupants of the vehicle are able to escape, they could then be hit by another vehicle that is traveling too fast to be able to stop.
Multiple-vehicle crashes usually occur at high-speeds because the drivers do not have time to respond to the first collision. This increases the risk of severe injury to the occupants of the vehicle.
In the worst case scenario, part of the vehicle will catch fire from spilled gasoline, which can then spread extremely quickly across the freeway. The fire could even spread to vehicles that were not initially involved in the crash.
Sometimes, the heat from these fires can run so hot that it can damage roadways or bridges by melting the asphalt and concrete. In extreme cases, bridges have even been known to collapse because their structures have melted down. Recently, a crash in Los Angeles ruined a bridge after a tanker-truck carrying oil was wedged under the overpass and caught fire.

A student from Huntington Beach who was studying abroad in Auckland, New Zealand crashed his car and killed three of his friends.
Stephen Houseman, 20, of Boston University, was charged with careless driving after he rolled his car and caused the deaths of Nicholas Jauberty, Daniela Lekhno and Austin Brashears.
Three other people were also injured. Their names are Kathy Moldawer, Alys McAlphine, Emily Melton and Margaret Theriault. Houseman has been charged for their injuries as well.

manded without plea until his next court appearance in June.
All of the students were doing student abroad programs with Auckland University and Auckland University of Technology.
They were all traveling in a two-car convoy to a popular tourist destination called Tongariro Crossing on the North Island of New Zealand in a group of 16 people.
According to police reports, the crash occurred when Houseman hit a gravelly patch on the side of the road and over-corrected, causing the vehicle to flip over.
Inspector Kevin Taylor, a road policing manager for the Bay of Plenty area of New Zealand, said that the van that they were traveling in, appeared to be in good condition, but authorities are still looking to see if the van suffered from mechanical failure.
Taylor also said that it was not an easy decision to charge the driver, but that the laws must be undertaken in all cases.
“However we are faced with a situation where three people have died and others are seriously injured and we must apply the law in an objective and dispassionate way. The process from here is that the case will be put before the court. Once the court process is concluded it will then be for the Coroner to make the final determination about cause of death.”
“We have ruled out any use of drugs or alcohol by any of the young people involved, including the driver.”
One of the victim’s parents said that they understand and empathize with Houseman’s parents. Their daughter, Meg Theriault, was put in a medically induced coma after she received severe head trauma from the impact of the crash.
“We feel their pain and he now has a journey of recovery much like our daughter does. We understand there needs to be a court process and we support it.”
“But that could have been any one of our kids at the wheel. This was an accident – all our kids were pursuing their dream. Nobody was intentionally doing anything that would harm anyone.”
Her parents also said that their daughter remains in critical condition, but had started breathing on her own for the first time since she was taken to the hospital. They hope that she continues to progress.
Auckland University will hold a remembrance ceremony for the lives lost tomorrow.
