A 4-year-old girl was rushed the hospital after being injured in a Riverside hit-and-run racing accident Monday afternoon. Authorities are searching for those responsible for injuring the young girl.
As of Tuesday the young girl, Carlie Rodriguez, remained in critical condition at Loma Linda University Medical Center with major head trauma. Her family remained by her side, alert to the situation and hoping that it gets better.
“She’s got a drain in her brain right now. Some other lines that are monitoring her blood pressure and things like that,” Christina Perez, Rodriguez’s aunt, told reporters.
On Monday momements before 2 p.m. on the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and Nelson Street in Riverside, Carlie was sitting in a booster seat of a Chevy Malibu that was coming off of a stop sign, like it usually did. She enjoying the drive but would not have anticipated what happened next.
Out of nowhere, according to witnesses, a 2008 Ford Mustang that was racing an older orange sports car slammed into the Chevy and seriously injured Carlie, all within seconds. Witnesses then took note of the scene and contacted authorities.
Det. Rick Prince said in a statement that the driver of the Mustang, a vehicle that was reported stolen, then stopped “and checked on the occupants of the Malibu and then fled on foot, leaving the Mustang behind.”
When emergency personnel arrived at the scene, they rushed the injured girl to the hospital, where she remained for medical attention.
Her father, the driver, was not injured, Riverside police told reporters.
Authorities said the driver of the sports car failed to stop and fled the scene. When he is found, he can face serious consequences for leaving the scene of the Riverside racing car accident.
“Anytime a street race is involved both vehicles including the non-contact vehicle will be held responsible for whatever took place here,” Sgt. Skip Stowalter reminded reporters.
Currently, authorities are working on the case, studying evidence and interviewing witnesses. They have not released other details regarding the wreck that injured the 4-year-old girl.

Authorities say at least three people were killed in a car collision that erupted in fire in South Los Angeles, Tuesday evening.
A few moments before 10:30 p.m., someone alerted authorities regarding a vehicle on the 800 block of West Manchester Boulevard. A witness at the scene said two vehicles had crashed and one of them caught on fire shortly after.
Los Angeles Fire Department stated that three of the victims in one car died at the scene after being the only car that crashed against a light pole. Those victims were trapped in the vehicle and were “beyond help,” per Katherine Main of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Sgt. Vargas with the Los Angeles Police Department’s South LA Traffic Division told reporters that the condition of a fourth man was unknown. But that victim was rushed to the hospital and treated for personal injuries. He was ejected from the vehicle at the time of the accident.
Originally Sgt. Vargas had announced that only two people died at the fiery scene.
Video footage of the scene was published online. It displayed flames that rose above the wrecked vehicle, lighting up the surroundings while a firefighter worked to stop the blaze from spreading. There were a set of skid marks that managed to get on a sidewalk, an a toppled light pole.
Further information about the victims involved in the collision has not been made available to the public.
Los Angeles Police Department is investigating the cause of the crash.
Officials told news reporters that an initial investigation showed that the car was traveling at a high rate of speed. Witnesses reported there may have been another vehicle involved that fled the scene right after the collision.
Following local automobile laws is important to reduce the chances of getting into an automobile accident. Make sure to pay attention to various speed limits set on roads that you are asked to follow. They are set to ensure the safety of those traversing through those thorough ways. Sometimes however, you are asked to follow the flow of the traffic. If traffic is at a standstill on a highway or a road, it becomes a safety hazard to travel at high rates of speed.

A teenaged driver accused of driving under the influence of alcohol and crashing into the back of a van killing five family members on Easter weekend pleaded not guilty in a Las Vegas courthouse Wednesday.
A teen that escaped from a California juvenile detention and crashed a vehicle weeks later, which killed five Southern California family members in Arizona, was charged with seven felony DUIs on Wednesday.
Authorities say Jean Ervin Soriano, an 18-year-old, also faces two misdemeanor charges of failure to decrease speed and driving without a license. He was driving with a blood-alcohol content percentage of 0.12, which is well above the Nevada legal limit of 0.08 percent.
Soriano was allegedly behind the wheel of vehicle on Interstate 15 while driving under the influence of alcohol. He was about 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas in a 1999 Dodge Durango when he lost control of the vehicle and hit a Chevy Astro van.
Inside the van were seven people – all family members. On impact their vehicle spun around and overturned. While turning, most of the occupants were ejected from inside the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries.
Soriano and a 23-year-old passenger in the SUV were also hurt when their vehicle rear-ended the van carrying a trio of brothers and four other family members back to the Los Angeles area for Easter after visiting a sick relative in Denver.
After the collision, a witness told investigators that he saw Soriano and his passenger walk away from the crash site but then returned before rescue crews arrived.
Soriano was arrested shortly after being treated and released from a hospital, per reporters.
He told the arresting trooper he had “too many” beers before the crash, according to an arrest report. Then when officials searched the wrecked SUV, they found several scattered empty beer bottles rolling inside.
Soriano is being held at Clark County jail on $3.5 million bail in isolated protective custody. He told the judge he used to live in California but moved to St. George, Utah. He told his attorney he feels scared about what happened and has been praying for the family members killed and injured at the wreck.
Authorities in Orange County, Calif., said that Soriano fled on March 1st from a juvenile guidance center in Santa Ana that treats drug and alcohol abusers.

A kayaker rescued a family of five after their SUV crashed and rolled into a Northern California river on Thursday.
While traversing through the Sierra Nevada community of Kyburz along Highway 50 during the afternoon in an SUV, a family was unexpectedly in an accident. For unknown reasons, the driver lost control of the vehicle. It veered off the road, hit a concrete mile marker, a large tree, and a boulder and then rolled into the American River in Sacramento, various reporters shared. It landed on its side and was half-submerged in the river.
Meanwhile, kayaker Mark Divittorio of Placerville was on the river at about the same time the SUV fell in and noticed the accident. He rushed to the scene of the accident and was able to extricate three children and get them safely to shore: a 4-year-old girl and two 15-year-twin girls.
“It was fortuitous that they didn’t actually land on me,” Divittorio told reporters. “I was kayaking right there moments before they plunged off the cliff.”
Divittorio returned to the SUV where he found the driver with his head partly underwater and the man’s wife helping to hold his head up
Within three minutes, a fire crew that happened to be in the area for another call was able to get to the scene.
Mike Pott, division chief of the El Dorado County Fire Protection District, told reporters that firefighters were able to stabilize the driver and get him and his wife out of the vehicle.
Christian Lemler, 50, of Livermore, was behind the wheel of vehicle at the time of the collision. He suffered moderate to major injuries, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Mike Poore told reporters.
Detectives are still working to investigate the accident. So far it is not clear how fast the SUV was going when it crashed into the river. It was raining at the time, but it was not known if the weather contributed to the crash.
Per authorities, all of the other family members suffered only bumps and bruises.
“All the circumstances came together,” Pott said. “Several things came together to help save this family.”
Everyone in the vehicle were wearing proper seatbelts and the child was strapped into a car seat, Pott said.
“If they didn’t have their seatbelts on I’m sure they would have all been ejected,” he said.
A single mother died on Monday after crashing with an allegedly a wrong-way driver on a San Diego road. Medical professionals alleged the wrong-way driver was severely depressed and may have wanted to commit suicide. The victim left three, now motherless, children behind.
Lupe Vargas a 38-year-old woman of Escondido was killed on eastbound State Route 78 when she was struck by a vehicle traveling the wrong way. It happened slightly west of San Marcos Boulevard while she was out delivering newspapers for the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Vargas was on one of two jobs she had to keep in order to provide for her family. She worked 16 hours a day to support her children ages 5, 8 and 17.
“She never had an easy life since she was divorced and she was taking care of three kids,” said victim’s brother Tony Vargas. “I have no words.”
Tony told reporters that he and his family are going through a rollercoaster of emotions. They feel angry, frustrated and in pain, especially after learning the driver who caused the accident was 48-year-old Yi Liu who was deemed suicidal by a medical examiner.
Officials made the announcement of Liu’s condition on Wednesday. They said Liu was depressed and it was likely she wanted to commit suicide when her vehicle shot into oncoming traffic.
Lupe Vargas’ family now hopes people will stay aware while on the road. They also understand that people living with a mental illness need help.
“I know that at some point her family didn’t have anything to do with it,” Tony told reporters. “At the end, they’re responsible all the way because they had to be taking care of somebody like that.”
Co-workers of the victim who were out delivering newspapers after 3 a.m. on Monday drove by the accident and most were unaware that someone they knew was the victim.
Family and friends helped establish a memorial fund for Vargas’ children.

In an effort to reduce preventable car accidents due to driving while distracted, a national month-long campaign has been launched. April is National Distracted Driving Awareness month and police departments across California will be actively ticketing those caught texting or operating cell phones while behind the wheel.
Across most California cities drivers will be ticketed right away without being issued a warning, even if it is their first offense. The month-long campaign aims at reducing the danger that goes behind distracted driving.
Currently, the minimum citation is $159 for a first offender; subsequent tickets will cost at least $279.
Last year in California more than 57,000 tickets were issued statewide for texting and hand-held cell phone use. Year 2012 ended with nearly 450,000 convictions.
Authorities constantly remind the public that distracted driving is a serious traffic safety concern that puts others on the road at risk. It is simply not worth driving distracted, getting a ticket, or crashing. Reports show that in recent years, hundreds of people have been killed and thousands of people have been seriously injured in California as a result of collisions that involved at least one driver who was distracted on a cell phone.
At least 225 local California law enforcement agencies, along with the California Highway Patrol, will conduct zero tolerance enforcements this month.
Nationwide approximately 3,331 were killed in 2011. To prevent further deaths and injuries, police departments across California will increase to crack down on those who try to operate a cellphone and a vehicle at the same time.
“We all know that talking on our cell phones while driving is distracting, but that doesn’t stop some people from continuing to do it,” Foster City Police Department Chief Matt Martell told reporters.
“This effort is intended to educate our community about the dangers of cell phone use while driving. We hope that once people see the statistics and realize the danger involved, they will change their driving habits to help protect themselves, their families, and others on the road,” Martell stated.
Those who use hand-held devices while operating a vehicle are at least four times as likely to get into wreck that can cause injuries. Younger inexperienced drivers under 20-year-old have the highest proportion of distracted-related fatal crashes. Additionally, texting while driving can delay a driver’s reaction time just as severely as having a blood alcohol content of a legally drunk driver, per various studies on the subject.
Turn off your phone while driving and keep it that way until you’ve reached your destination and are no longer operating a vehicle.
At least four people were injured Sunday after a person crashed a vehicle through the front of a Wal-Mart Supercenter in San Jose. After wrecking, the driver got out of the car and began to assault bystanders.
It all began when a red Oldsmobile Cutlass sedan crashed without warning through the front automatic sliding doors of the store shortly after 11:15 a.m. It ended up near the pharmacy section at the storefront on top of a beer display prior to coming to a stop.
San Jose police Officer Albert Morales told reporters that the unidentified driver then exited the car and used a blunt object to attack people.
When authorities arrived on the scene they arrested the rampaged driver.
Detectives were on the scene to help piece together the details of the wreck. They reported that the driver was in his thirties but were unable to determine the speed the vehicle was traveling prior to crashing into the store front. The vehicle penetrated about 20 feet into the storefront at a time when about 70 people were shopping inside.
Morales told reporters that at least one person suffered serious injuries. He was unsure as to what extent of seriousness. And three other people were injured as well, one of which was a store employee. None of the people involved suffered life-threatening injuries.
Prior to making a grand entrance through the store, the driver fist sideswiped customer Sharon Kaye’s vehicle at the store’s parking lot. Witnesses stated the driver made several runs around the parking lot prior to driving between poles at the entrance and crashing into the store.
“At first, I thought I may have done something to anger him while driving,” Kaye told reporters. “But then I realized he was out to get into the store.”
Authorities enclosed the crash scene with yellow police tape and store employees covered the front doors with large pieces of cardboard during the investigation.
Kory Lundberg, A Wal-Mart spokeswoman told the news reporters that the store was closed for several hours, and confirmed that one employee was among those hurt.
“We’re obviously very concerned about the associate who was injured,” the spokeswoman said.
Shopper and witness Tianna Doan told reporters that the employee was a cashier who was hit with the object and had a head injury.
