Two men are recovering in a San Diego area hospital after their Ford Explorer SUV rolled multiple times on Interstate 5 late Monday night.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the rollover accident took place in the northbound lanes of the state-long highway, just south of the Del Mar Heights Road exit at around 10:20 p.m.
At this time there are no available witnesses to comment on the particulars of the accident, all that is known is that the vehicle somehow lost control and rolled multiple times before ultimately coming to rest back on its wheels.
The accident dented and smashed in all sides of the SUV, trapping the two men inside the vehicle, who needed to be pried from the vehicle with the assistance of the Jaws of Life, provided by firefighters from the San Diego Fire Department.
The men were then immediately taken to nearby Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla for injuries described as non-life-threatening.
San Diego police are currently investigating the accident to try to determine what may have caused the roll, be it some kind of driver error, mechanical malfunction, or another vehicle. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor.
The crash force the closure of multiple lanes as city crews dragged the incapacitated vehicle from the scene. All lanes were fully reopened a short time later.
