A man was killed late Thursday night as his SUV smashed into a disabled car and rolled on Interstate 8 in San Diego.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the 42 year old man was traveling eastbound on the major highway in a Honda CR-V at around 11:30 p.m. when he began drifting onto the side of the road where he hit a stopped car with a woman sitting inside, waiting for help.
The force of the accident tore off the left rear potion of the disabled car, a Chrysler PT Cruiser, and sent his SUV tumbling. While rolling, he was ejected from the vehicle.
Witnesses to the accident pulled over and attempted to help the man by performing CPR until responding officers took over the life saving activity. Unfortunately, the man was pronounced dead by the time paramedics and firefighters made it to the scene.
The woman inside the PT Cruiser was not seriously injured in the accident.
An initial investigation into the crash suggested that the man was not wearing a seatbelt at the time, which is why he was thrown from the vehicle. Police are still searching for answers as to why he let the vehicle stray to the shoulder.
His identity has not yet been released, as authorities are still working to notify the man’s next of kin.
