22-year-old Fidel Barrera, of Midway City was driving the vehicle that overturned and was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs on Monday evening.

Lt. Mitch O’Brien, an officer of the Huntington Beach Police Department, said that Barrera is currently out of custody as he waits for his toxicology report.

Huntington Beach police officers said that according to witness reports, the crash happened at about 4:25 p.m. at the intersection of Warner Avenue and Algonquin Street.

The driver of the 1999 Toyota 4-Runner, which is an SUV, was traveling at a high rate of speed in the eastbound lanes of Warner Avenue when unexpectedly lost control of his vehicle and flipped it more than once.

When Huntington Beach firefighters had arrived at the accident, they found that the Toyota 4-Runner had sustained major damage and the woman was trapped. Firefighters had to use the “Jaws of Life,” a machine that is used primarily to remove trapped motorists from their vehicles in the case of an accident, in order to extract the passengers. According to the reports from the Huntington Beach Police Department, there appeared to be four passengers in the vehicle, including the woman who was trapped.

As previously mentioned, Barrera was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and driving with a suspended driver’s license.

According to police reports, they did not mention whether any of the other passengers were injured in the crash. It is unclear whether Barrera was speeding at the time of the accident, although that remains under investigation.

The crash is currently being investigated and police are asking for the help of any witnesses by calling their local police stations.

The accident, which occurred a little after 11:00 p.m. on June 25, 2012, sent the teen to the hospital with major injuries although authorities did not specify what injuries the boy suffered exactly.

The accident happened when a Kia Sephia, driven by a 25-year-old woman from Wawona, hit the boy while he was riding in the left lane on the northbound side of Highway 41, near Audubon Drive. The boy was thrown to the center median and lay there until emergency responders arrived at the scene to help him. The driver of the sedan stopped at the scene to offer assistance and fully cooperated with investigators.

According to reports from the California Highway Patrol, the driver did not see the boy because of the dark clothing he was wearing. He was said to have been wearing a black hat, dark jeans and a dark t-shirt.

The Fresno Bee also indicated that poor lighting in the area may have contributed to the accident. Authorities are conducted further inquiries into perhaps installing a better lighting system in the area.

Traffic was stopped in both lanes when investigators arrived to look at the scene and clean up the damaged vehicle and bicycle.

The victim was transported to Community Regional Medical Center. No details were reported about his condition. Neither the driver nor her two passengers were injured. The victim’s family was notified immediately and arrived at the hospital to visit him.

Authorities did not confirm the blood-alcohol level of the teenager nor did they say where he was coming from. Witnesses suggested that he was intoxicated because he was displaying the usual signs before the accident such as staggering while he was walking his bike and other strange behavior.

No information was released discussing whether the boy or the driver would be charged in this accident. Witnesses are asked to call their local police station if they have any further information.

17 Injured in 19-Car Pileup in Agua Dulce

The consensus of the numerous authorities that responded to the scene of a car wreck that involved 19 vehicles was that, as bad as it was, it could have been a lot worse.

The accident occurred on the Antelope Valley (14) Freeway just north of Los Angeles in the smaller city of Agua Dulce.

On Tuesday afternoon, a tractor-trailer and 18 other smaller vehicles smashed into each other, leaving the roadway littered with the crumpled remains of the cars. Although 17 people went to the hospital, luckily no one died.

Officer J.C. Lesnet of the California Highway Patrol said that all of the officers that returned from the scene to the headquarters in Newhall kept emphasizing how “everyone was really lucky.” Even one of the motorists who had been trapped in the wreckage of their car had only suffered minor cuts and bruises.

Inspector Quvondo Johnson, the spokesman for the county Fire Department, said at first they believed that two people suffered critical injuries, but later retracted that statement. They released no further details about their condition.

Lesnet said that according to witnesses, the wreck happened at about 9:45 a.m. when a restaurant-style metal table fell out of the bed of a pickup truck where it had been left unsecured.

Vehicles either swerved into other lanes to avoid the table or they hit it which started off the chain reaction accident in the southbound lanes near the Escondido Canyon Road.

The pickup did not stop and it is unclear if he was aware that the table had fallen off the back. According to Lesnet, the description of the truck has not yet been made clear, although they are still questioning witnesses.

According to a Caltrans spokesperson, the area has been under construction for some time as part of a 20 mile paving project from Santa Clarita to Palmdale. The majority of the work is being conducted at night.

The spokesperson did not know if the roadwork had affected the crash.

Traffic was backed up for two to three miles for several hours following the crash, and the final lane reopened at 2:08 p.m.

At least 50 firefighters were called to the scene to help put out fires, clean up the hazardous spills and extract people from the wreckage of their vehicles. Some fuel was spilled on the road, but clean-up crews found no evidence of any toxic or hazardous materials spilled from the tractor-trailer truck.

Lesnet said that these kinds of accidents usually occur when there is low visibility from rain, sleet, snow or dust.

“For a clear, dry day, this was pretty bad,” he said.

The accident occurred at about 11:40 a.m. in the northbound lanes of the Pacific Coast Highway near Bolsa Chica State Beach, in between Seapoint Street and Warner Avenue, said Lt. Brian Seitz of the Huntington Beach Police Department.

The victim of the accident, Roger Michael Lippman, 63, of Huntington Beach was pronounced dead at the scene.

Joel Alexander Murphy, 27, of Mission Viejo, was arrested in connection with the accident after he fled the scene and arrived in Seal Beach. He was booked on suspicion of hit-and-run, driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter which are all felonies. He was also arrested for probation violation.

According to witnesses to the accident, a silver Hyundai was speeding down the hill just north of Seapoint Street when it hit Lippman. It sustained serious passenger side windshield damage, but continued driving. The driver was later caught by Seal Beach Police after they received a call of an accident at Westminster Boulevard and Kitts Highway involving a car that matched the vehicle’s description.

Upon initial investigation, Lippman and Murphy were both traveling northbound on Pacific Coast Highway when the crash happened. However, investigators were unsure of any other details that may have caused the crash. Reports from witnesses varied and it was unclear if the motorist or the bicyclist swerved into the path of the other. Murphy did not appear to have rendered any type of aid at the scene before he fled.

The northbound lanes of the Pacific Coast Highway were closed for several hours following the crash, said traffic controllers.

The family and friends of Lippman said that he was an avid bicyclist and a friend to the community of Huntington Beach. No date has yet been set for his funeral or memorial. However, some of his friends left a white bike with pink roses on the side of road in memoriam.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is being asked to call the authorities of Huntington Beach to explain any further details that they may have.
