Patrick Dempsey Saves Teenager from Car Wreck

The heroic actor Patrick Dempsey, who plays Dr. Derek Shepherd on ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” doesn’t just save lives on TV. He also saves them in real life.

Dempsey saved the life of a teenager Weston Masset in Malibu last week after the teenager flipped his car near the actor’s home.

“I was scared for my life, I was upside down,” said Weston Masset.

Masset was knocked unconscious by the crash and was trapped inside the vehicle.

Luckily for Masset, Dempsey saw the car flip and ran to the scene of the accident with a fire extinguisher and a crowbar. He pried the doors open and pulled the teenager to safety, then stayed by his side the whole time to ensure that the boy would be alright.

Masset suffered from a concussion and an eye injury, but will make a full recovery.

His first words on seeing Dempsey pulling him out of the wreck were, “‘Are you famous?” and Dempsey said, “Yeah I’m a doctor,” Masset said.

Dempsey personally called the boy’s mother to reassure her and inform her of the accident.

“He had a certain authority in his voice,” said Masset’s mother Mary Beth Masset. “I asked if he was a paramedic and he said no, ‘this is Patrick Dempsey.’”

“I’m just super grateful. I can’t wait to thank him personally,” said Mary Beth Masset.

Steering Wheel That Vibrates To Give Drivers Guidance Under Development

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University and AT&T Labs are developing a vibrating steering that will give drivers guidance through touch, allowing drivers to keep their eyes on the road, ScienceDaily reports in a news story this week. Using the sense of touch will give a car’s navigation system another means of communicating information. In a study conducted by the two institutions, researchers found that younger drivers were not as distracted by a car’s navigation system display screen when they received cues from the vibrating steering wheel. For elder drivers, the news story explains, the cues from the vibrating steering wheel augmented the sound cues they normally prefer.

The researchers found that while touch cues in most cases improved driver safety and ability, merely adding sensory cues isn’t always best. This was especially true for older drivers because the additional information could strain the capacity of the brain to process it. The study revealed that it would be best to personalize the sensory feedback from a car’s navigation system, based somewhat on the driver’s age.

Some car manufacturers already have vibrating steering wheels available, which can let a driver know about road hazards, for example. The vibrating steering wheel that AT&T is developing, however, will offer more information. Twenty spots on the steering wheel’s rim can be pulsed in any order. The study examined firing the spots in a clockwise order, which told a driver to make a right turn, with a counterclockwise order telling a driver to turn left.

The researchers particularly wanted to examine if information conveyed to different senses—sight, hearing, touch—at the same time would improve elderly drivers’ performance. As the ScienceDaily news story explains, the number of people who are over age 65 and drive is growing quickly, and improving their driving ability as their vision, hearing and mobility declines with age will help them remain mobile and independent.

The researchers studied 16 drivers who ranged from 16 to 36, and 17 drivers who were over 65 years old. Using driving simulators, they discovered that the amount of time that drivers took their eyes off the road was a great deal less with the combination of sound and touch feedback than with sound and visual feedback that is used in most GPS systems. Elder drivers took their eyes off the road 4 percent less with the sound and touch combination, and young drivers 9 percent less.

When all three cues were used—hearing, visual, and touch—young drivers reduced, by a significant amount, the time their eyes were off the road, but not the drivers who were older. The researchers said this could be due to the preference the drivers expressed. Older drivers preferred sound feedback and younger drivers preferred visual feedback. Combining all three information cues—sound, visual, touch—created a burden for older drivers to process the information. Personalizing technology for age and individual preference will help drivers focus on their driving.

The accident, which occurred a little after 3:00 a.m. on April 26, 2012, may have been the result of drunk driving, the CHP said. According to CHP, The Bee reports, a woman was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Impala, heading south on Highway 190. She did not stop at a stop sign at Road 190, and the Impala collided with a 2000 Toyota pickup.  The Bee reports that Tommy Lee Cato of Porterville was the driver of the pickup.

The twenty-seven-year-old woman, and the two males who were passengers in the car, aged 25 and 41, died in the crash. CHP said that none of the occupants of the Impala was wearing a seat belt, The Bee reports. Cato’s injuries were moderate.

The Bee’s news story says the identities of the three who died in the crash had not been released.

High-speed Crash in San Diego Leads to Arrest of Suspected Drunk Driver

Early this morning, a high-speed crash in San Diego led to the arrest of the driver who was suspected of driving drunk, The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. The accident, which occurred a little before 2:00 a.m. on April 26, 2012, resulted when the driver, who was traveling north on Interstate 15, lost control of his vehicle as he attempted to exit the freeway at Aero Drive.

According to the Union-Tribune’s story, CHP Officer Jesse Udovich said the driver passed a California Highway Patrol vehicle. Udovich said the officer estimated the driver was doing 100 miles per hour.

After passing the patrol vehicle, the car immediately took an exit off the freeway. While trying to make the turn, Udovich said, the driver lost control of the car and it rolled over, and smashed into SDG&E utility boxes on the opposite side of the intersection.

The wrecked car came to rest on its roof. The front of the car was crushed by the accident and the air bags had opened. Neither the driver nor the passenger was hurt, according to The Union-Tribune’s story.

Signal lights at the intersection where the crash occurred were affected, and back-up batteries were powering them.

The Union-Tribune reports that a Caltrans worker, who was at the scene, said the car seemed to be brand new, with paper license plates.

Westbound 22 Exit Reopening After Year-Long Construction

The yearlong headache that has plagued drivers traveling from Long Beach ends this weekend when crews reopen a busy ramp on the westbound 22.

The Seventh Street Bridge carries about 300,000 vehicles a day from the northbound I-405 and the westbound 22 into Long Beach.

Morning traffic has continued at a normal pace despite the closure of the ramp. According to plans, the ramp will reopen at 5 a.m. on Saturday.

The bridge was destroyed and rebuilt to make more space for the new carpool lanes on the 405.

For most travelers, this is a welcome relief. Alberto Campos, who drives from his house in Long Beach to the USC campus in Irvine, the reopening of the bridge will help with his commute.

“It added 15, 20 minutes to my commute,” said Campos, 31.

Long Beach officials were afraid that there were be a significant increase in traffic congestion, when the overpass closed last April.

“In a matter of the first couple of weeks, people started learning the detour routes and that (street) congestion went away,” said Steve Bos, with the city’s engineering bureau.

The traffic planners worked to minimize potential impacts by synchronizing the traffic signals to keep traffic moving on surface streets. The Orange County Transportation Authority gave the city of Long Beach $1.5 million for street improvements, including another lane on Westminster Avenue.

Commuter Jordan Molina, 34, travels from Orange County to Long Beach City College and said that the closure was a huge inconvenience.

“When it was open, it was easy to get to where you were going. But, when it closed, you had to take a lot of detours,” Molina said.

The work was part of a $277-million project that attempted to address the traffic at the intersection of the I-405, the 22, and the I-605 come together. The project connected the carpool lanes so that motorists don’t have to leave them when changing freeways.

College Wrestler Killed in Crash Remembered by Friends and Family

A former California State Fullerton wrestler who died in a crash on Monday was remembered by his friends and family as dedicated and hardworking.

“Andre was one of the best all-around young men that I’ve ever been able to coach,” said Dan Hicks, Gonzalez’s former coach. “He was a very good wrestler, but even more he was a great leader, teammate, and just a great friend.”

California Highway Patrol officers responded to reports of a crash on Monday at about 3:30 a.m. They found Gonzalez dead on the northbound 133 just north of the 73 exit. According to CHP and coroner’s officials, he was ejected from his vehicle.

CHP officials said the accident occurred after Gonzalez miscalculated the curve in the roadway. His Chrysler PT Cruiser slid into the median and rolled over several times before it stopped on its side.

Gonzalez was a senior at San Jose State and was set to graduate in May with a degree in kinesiology. He was also the captain of the wrestling squad at the university.

“He worked super hard all through his college career,” said Hicks, who recruited Gonzalez out of high school. “… Never an issue in how hard he worked. It was his character, who he was.”

Risto Marttinen, 29, a former coach of Gonzalez at Cal State Fullerton, recalled Gonzalez’s dedication and persistence during his freshman year at school.

“He came in as a fourth-string guy. He was really resilient,” Marttinen said. “Midway through his freshman year, he made the transition. He was our starter all four years.”

Gonzalez is survived by his mother, father and two younger sisters.

The accident occurred at about 8:15 p.m. on the 2800 block of West Cerritos Avenue near Magnolia Avenue.

The teenager was taken to the UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The boy and a man were pushing a Honda Civic in the No. 2 lane of the westbound side on West Cerritos while a woman steered.

“They were trying to push the vehicle out of the way in preparation for street-sweeping day,” Sgt. Bob Dunn said.

While they were pushing the Civic, a Honda Ridgeline hit the Civic and the boy from behind. The man had time to get out of the way, but the boy was hit.

The force from the impact of the crash pushed the Civic into a parked vehicle. The woman who was steering the car suffered head injuries and was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The driver of the truck remained at the scene and was cooperative with authorities. Police are unsure if alcohol or speed was involved in the crash.
