The parents of a woman that was crushed by a tree while driving her car last year have filed wrongful death claims against the city of Newport Beach.
Two separate claims were filed in the last two weeks by Haeyoon Miller’s mother and father.

Her mother, Hyun Myung Suk, seeks damages for the minimum amount stated by law, or damages “well in excess of $10,000.”
The accident occurred when a 60-foot tree fell on Miller’s car at the intersection of Irvine Avenue and 17th Street and smashed her Hyundai while she was stopped at a red light.
The driver suffered severe injuries and later died in the hospital.
According to the lawsuits, the city was negligent in its care of the 10-ton, 70-foot-tall tree. The tree fell from Irvine Avenue’s median in September and crushed Miller’s sedan.
Eucalyptus trees had fallen in the area before and Suk claims that because of this, the city was aware of the dangers.
She also alleges that the city attempted to destroy the evidence by removing and destroying close to 100 eucalyptus trees throughout the area, just after the accident.
An investigation is now underway, although city officials refuse to release its contents.
Her parents also claim that emergency responders did not stabilize the tree after it fell which may have contributed to Miller’s death.
Witnesses said that at the scene of the accident, firefighters attempted to remove the tree, but they dropped it back on the car.

A man died this morning on Interstate 15 in Temecula when he drifted onto the shoulder and struck the back of a stopped tractor trailer, The Press-Enterprise reports. The 34-year-old victim had been driving a vacuum truck and a witness told authorities that the vehicle was weaving before it slammed into the semi at 7:30 a.m. on March 30, 2012.

Officer Nathan Baer, a spokesman for the Temecula-area California Highway Patrol, said Donnie Miller, the driver of the big-rig, was stopped on the shoulder of the Winchester Road exit from southbound Interstate 15, according to The Press-Enterprise. The big-rig driver was calling his dispatch center for directions. Officer Baer said the vacuum truck was traveling at roughly 40 miles per hour at the time it hit the big-rig.
No other details are available on what led to the fatal accident.

Early Wednesday morning, March 28, 2012, a 25-year-old woman died after a car hit her on Highway 99 and left the scene of the accident. The woman, Shacorie R. Hood, had run across the highway to help people who had been in a crash, the Fresno Bee reports, when a vehicle hit her at approximately 1:30 a.m.

According to California Highway Patrol as reported by the Fresno Bee, a Buick had crashed and was stopped in the center median on the northbound side of Highway 99 near McKinley Avenue. Hood, and other people traveling in a car on the highway, had stopped to offer help. Witnesses said a Honda or Acura hit Hood as she ran across the highway, and the driver of the car that struck her did not remain on scene.

Two cars were hit, and one of them was demolished when a Light Rail train hit them this morning around 11:20 a.m. at 10thand O Streets in Sacramento’s downtown area. The March 29, 2012 accident resulted when the Light Rail lights malfunctioned and gave cars and pedestrians the right of way to cross, witnesses and train passengers said, as reported by News10 Sacramento. The train, which had been traveling east on O Street, entered the intersection and hit the two cars.

According to News10 Sacramento’s story, a black BMW was demolished in the crash, and a second vehicle—a sedan—spun out. A male driver who was trapped in the BMW was rescued by Sacramento firefighters who extracted him. Responders took the injured man to the hospital.
Responders attended to the woman who had been driving the other car involved in the crash. She suffered minor injuries, but she was not transported to a hospital.
News10 Sacramento reports that two passengers on the train said they had minor injuries.

The police department of Buena Park revealed that a man was hospitalized after he attempted to cross a street outside of a crosswalk.

The accident occurred at about 10:20 p.m. on Tuesday in the northbound lanes of Knott Avenue, just north of the Lincoln Avenue intersection.
The man, who is believed to be homeless, suffered severe leg and head injuries and was taken to the UCI Medical Center for help.
The female driver of the vehicle stayed to talk to police and was cooperative with their investigation. No charges were filed.
The northbound lanes were closed for about three hours while police investigated the scene.

A woman from Hayward was arrested on her birthday on Saturday night after she was issued three different tickets for speeding over a one-hour span.

Lynne Cahill-Gomez, who was celebrating her 53rd birthday, was first seen speeding in her 2007 Hyundai SUV on State Route 70, just south of the Kempton Road exit in Sutter County. According to the radar gun of one California Highway Patrol officer, she was going about 103 miles per hour.
Twenty minutes later, Cahill-Gomez was pulled over again on Route 70, just north of Plumas Lake Boulevard in Yuba County. This time she was going 105 mph.
Cahill-Gomez was spotted speeding yet again on SR- 70 at 9:08 p.m. just south of woodruff Lane. She was going 76 miles per hour in a 55 mile per hour zone.
When the CHP pulled over, he noticed that she had had two other moving violations that evening and he arrested her after a brief struggle.

An elderly man died on Tuesday while using his power scooter chair to cross a busy Anaheim street, according to police.
The collision occurred at the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Clementine Street. Officers responded to the scene at about 11 a.m.

The 84-year-old man was using his power scooter to cross the northbound lanes of Lincoln Avenue when he was hit by a white Dodge Caravan, according to Anaheim police Sgt. Robert Dunn.
The man was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead due to his severe wounds.
The man was later identified by the Orange County Coroner’s Office as Herbert Hamilton of Anaheim.
The accident is still under investigation as police try to determine who had the right-of-way. It was also unknown if Hamilton was crossing within the confines of a crosswalk.
The driver of the Caravan cooperated with police and stayed at the scene. No arrests of citations were reported.

Bobby Brown, Whitney Houston’s ex-husband, was pulled over at 12:20 p.m. in the San Fernando Valley for using his cell phone while driving and then failed a field sobriety test.
His arrest comes just days after the coroner’s report was released which stated that Whitney Houston, 48, had died of accidental driving and was found with cocaine and other drugs in her blood stream.

The Fullerton Police said that a 14-year-old boy was injured when the car that he was a passenger in crashed into a tree and left him with severe wounds.
The accident occurred at about 12:30 a.m. on Monday in the 1000 block of North Gilbert Street, near the intersection of Hughes Drive.

The boy had to be cut from the car and was then transported to a local hospital, where he remains in critical, but stable condition.
The driver, an 18-year-old, was speeding in his Toyota Corolla as he was heading south on Gilbert. He apparently lost control of the vehicle on the wet roadway after the heavy rains of this past weekend.
The driver was able to get out of the vehicle and call 911. He later complained of chest pains and was taken to the hospital for examination.
Gilbert was closed from Hughes to Pioneer Avenue until 7 in the morning.
