Fresno Drunk Driver Kills Pedestrian in Attempted Hit-and Run

An 18 year-old Fresno resident was reportedly drunk when he got behind the wheel and hit and killed a 20 year-old man after a weekend party. The accident occurred in East Central Fresno near Shields and Armstrong streets.

Family members of both of the people involved said that the two did not know each other prior to the party on Saturday night.

Shawn Schulte, the pedestrian, had big plans after graduation from college. He had reportedly just got a job offer to work as a computer tech in Denmark and was excited for the future.

When he left the party, he was walking with his girlfriend, Christy Cabral, when he saw the lights of a truck approaching quickly. He shoved his girlfriend out of the way, but had no time to get himself out of the truck’s path.

The truck driver hesitated after hitting Schulte, but continued on without stopping.

Police caught up with him just two miles from the scene of the accident attempting to flee on foot.

The suspect is being held on charges of DUI, hit and run and vehicular manslaughter.

Light-rail Train and SUV Collide in Sacramento; Three People Dead

Saturday afternoon, a sport utility vehicle and a light-rail train collided in Sacramento, killing three people, The Sacramento Bee reports. The victims were two adults and an 18-month-old baby who had been traveling in the SUV. Police said that a fourth person who had been in the SUV was wounded, and taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

The Bee reports that officials for Regional Transit stated that the accident might be the worst light-rail accident the system has experienced in its 25 years of operation.

The January 28, 2012 accident occurred when the train, which was heading south on the Meadowview line, hit the SUV around 4:10 p.m. on 26th Avenue, pushing the vehicle roughly 20 yards. Fifty passengers had been on the train at the time of the collision. The Bee reports that a police spokesman, Sgt. Andrew Pettit, stated the train remained on the tracks after the crash, but the SUV was flipped over and landed upside down.

A woman who lives near the accident site said that the collision sounded like an explosion. The woman, Barbara Rodriguez, said that her friend and one of her family members rushed to the crash site and did what they could to help until police arrived. The witnesses found a baby, and woman and man who had died. Another woman, according to the witnesses, was still alive.

Sgt. Petit stated in The Bee’s story that 17 passengers who had been on the train were injured, but most of the victims’ injuries were minor. Among the injured passengers, three adults and three children were taken by responders to UC Davis Medical Center. According to a spokeswoman for the hospital, the condition of all the train’s victims was fair.

A 13-year-old boy, D’Angelo Charles, who had been on the train at the time of the collision, said in The Bee’s story that the only thing he heard was a “boom” and then he saw the car flip. The collision had knocked him into a pole inside the train. He was one of the train’s passengers who were at UC Davis Medical Center where doctors were treating him for an injured lower back and neck, and also a headache.

The Sacramento Bee reports that Mike Wiley, Regional Transit’s general manager, said the warning lights were blinking and the crossing bars were down as the train approached. He said the driver, who had been behind the wheel of a Nissan Pathfinder, steered around another car and then around the bars. After examining video from the train track crossing that recorded the crash as it happened, Wiley stated that the train ran directly into the side of the SUV. The Bee reports that Wiley also said the train operator engaged the emergency brake just before colliding with the SUV. Because of sound walls at the sides of the tracks, visibility is limited, Wiley added, and he also explained that the train had been traveling at 50 to 55 miles per hour.

Sgt. Pettit stated that because three trains had been traveling through the crossing, one after another, the crossing bars had been down for some time. He said he didn’t believe the crossing arms lifted after each train passed, and that might have played a role in the SUV driver’s actions.

According to neighbors and Regional Transit officials, it is difficult for drivers to see if a train is approaching because of the sound walls that border the tracks. Barbara Rodriguez’s husband, Antonio, had stated for The Bee that a driver can’t see unless a car is right on the tracks. He also stated that he and other people in the neighborhood had seen more than one car drive around barriers, at least several times over the last few months, and it concerned them that an accident might result.

The Bee reports that Regional Transit General Manager Wiley said there is no problem with the intersection. A Regional Transit operations chief, Mark Longergan, said that 55 miles per hour speeds for trains in that area are common. He explained the gates are timed to block cars from the tracks at those speeds, and if the trains were to travel more slowly, the gates would be down too long. Employees of the light rail tested and examined the safety equipment after the collision.

Limited Visibility Causes Nineteen Car Pileup, 10 Dead

One of the worst traffic accidents in recent memory has left ten people dead and 18 people in the hospital after a brush fire caused limited visibility on the freeway in Gainesville, Florida.

The accident occurred in the early morning hours on Sunday at around 3:45 a.m., when the smoke from a nearby brush fire coupled with fog on the I-75 in northern Florida.

The pileup happened on both sides of the freeway and closed all of the lanes of the freeway in both directions as authorities worked to remove victims from their cars and put out the fires from the accident.

There is no word yet as to what was the initial accident that sparked the pile-up, but at least seven tractor trailer trucks were involved.

When emergency crews arrived, visibility was so poor that they could only locate victims by their moans and screams.

The passenger cars smashed into the trailer trucks and in some cases were crushed beneath the trucks when they were hit again from traffic coming from behind them.

One of the victims of the accident, Donna Henry, told the Gainesville Sun newspaper that she was on the southbound side of the freeway when she was suddenly blinded by the smoke.

Henry said, “We just hit it, and you couldn’t see anything. You heard like 15 times somebody hit, from this side and that, north and south. It was bad.”

Her car hit the guardrail on the outside lane and ended up off the side of the road. She called emergency responders to the scene.

She reportedly heard other crashed occurring throughout the time period.

The freeway had been closed previously due to poor visibility, but was reopened hours before the crash when authorities thought that the smoke had cleared.

Softball Star Killed by Distracted Driver

Jorene Ypanto Nicolas, 29, from San Diego was sentenced in the death of another motorist after she rammed her car into the back of another car at 80 miles per hour.

Apparently, Nicolas was driving her Toyota Prius on the northbound 405 in Fountain Valley when traffic stopped ahead of her. Nicolas was distracted and did not notice the flow of traffic had halted. She slammed into the back of a Hyundai sedan driven by a 23-year-old softball star named Deanna Mauer.

According to authorities, it’s not clear if Nicolas was using her phone before the accident, but she was clearly distracted or she would have noticed the traffic flow, which had been stopped for a few seconds.

She was charged with vehicular manslaughter and could face six years in prison if she is convicted.

Nicolas only suffered a few scrapes in the accident.

According to witnesses, Mauer’s car had just started moving in the traffic when it was struck. Her car was pushed into the car in front of her before it spun and crashed into the center divider.

Nicolas’ car also crashed into the center median.

Authorities say Mauer was wearing her seatbelt at the time of crash. She was transported to a medical center where she was pronounced dead from a brain death caused by a vertebral artery transection.

Mauer was a high school and college softball star. She played for Central Arizona College before she transferred to San Jose State. She competed in the World University games in Bangkok, Thailand.

After she graduated, she worked as an assistant softball coach at her high school in Orange County and at a Whole Foods in Huntington Beach.

She spoke with her parents on the phone just before the accident.

The affected tires will have a “Made in U.S.A.” mark and the last four digits of the ID number will be from 3809 to 4410.

San Clemente Officials Focusing on Pedestrian and Bike Safety

San Clemente City officials are concentrating their efforts to turn San Clemente into an example of a bike-and pedestrian-friendly place.

The first victory for bicycle enthusiasts in the San Clemente area came last spring, when officials installed a traffic signal at the intersection of Avenida Estacion and El Camino Real so that crossing would be safer for bicycle riders.

In March, the General Plan Advisory Committee will review the bicycle and pedestrian draft plan for more additions to the city. It will be discussed until August when a vote will be held.

On January 1, 2011 a state law named AB1358 (or the Complete Streets Act) came into effect in California. It emphasizes making the streets more accessible for other types of transportation and updating existing roads to include bike lines, crosswalks and traffic signals.

The city has hired a consultant to draft the new plans for the city’s “complete streets.” They have also raised the idea of changing one of the flood-control channels into a bike and pedestrian path between San Clemente High School and North Beach.

On the southern side of town, officials are revising plans for a road reduction at South El Camino Real from four lanes to two. They would create a turn lane in the middle with diagonal parking spaces on the inland side and a bike lane on the side closest to the I-5.

Another victory for bicyclists has been won, when the city voted for an upgrade to the Avenida Pico/I-5 that would be safer for bicyclists.
