A violent, high speed accident took the life of two adults and seriously injured two children late Wednesday morning in Woodland Hills.
According to local police, the accident took place just before 11 a.m. in the 20400 block of West Califa Street, where a Toyota RAV4 SUV with 4 occupants on board ran through a stop sign at high speeds.
Witnesses to the crash said that after the small SUV blew through the stop sign it swerved to avoid an oncoming car, rolled, and smashed into a parked Ford F-150 pickup truck.
All four passengers inside the SUV had to be pulled from the wreckage by responding police and firefighters. The male driver and a female passenger, both in their 40s, were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identity has yet to be released, as the county coroner’s office is still working to notify their families.
Two young girls, ages 8 and 14, were taken to Northridge Hospital, where they are listed in critical condition. Their relationship to the deceased man and woman has not been released. No one else was hurt in the crash.
The accident forced the closure of a portion of West Califa Street as cleanup crews worked to remove the downed SUV and truck from the scene. Much of the cabin portion of the vehicle was completely smashed in, making the wreckage appear as though the vehicle was a convertible. Much of the front end of the truck was destroyed as well.
Police are currently taking a closer look at the accident to determine what else may have been a factor in the crash, aside from the high speeds and reckless disregard for the stop sign.
Stop signs are put in place to keep us safe. To disregard such a simple tool to help drivers safely navigate through intersections is both reckless and selfish. The result of this disregard for the rules of the road is often like this: serious accidents that could have been prevented with the simple act of obeying road laws.
